Photodynamic therapy for viral warts involves the application of a photosensitiser to the affected area, followed by activation with light of a specific wavelength. The therapy destroys infected cells whilst sparing surrounding healthy tissue.
Indications
Recalcitrant viral warts unresponsive to standard treatment, widespread warts, periungual warts
Contraindications
Pregnancy, allergy to the photosensitiser, porphyria, photosensitivity disorders
Anesthesia
Usually not required; a burning sensation may occur during the procedure
Physical activity
Protect the treated area from direct sunlight for 48 hours; avoid swimming pools and saunas until healing
Recommended number of sessions
3-6 sessions in 2-4 week intervals; determined individually by the physician
